While it was Cyndi Lauper‘s version of “I Drove All Night” which made this song famous and it’s a very good take on it indeed, it was originally intended for Roy Orbison and his version of the track, recorded back in 1987, is definitely worthy of mention as well. This is an atmospheric, bittersweet song and both Orbison and Lauper captured the heart of it really well albeit in rather different ways. Whatever version you prefer: it’s a good song either way. The Big O gets my vote, personally.
Oh, Celine Dion also covered the song but… the less said about that one the better.
